Brief Answer:
Suggestive of a ganglion cyst - can be aspirated or surgically removed

Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam,
Thanks for writing in to us at hcm.
This is Dr.Riyanka and I am glad to be helping you with your query.

Fluid filled cystic swellings at the joints especially wrist joints and ankle joints are usually suggestive of ganglion cysts. They originate at the joints and tendons. They are benign lesions. They are painless swellings but if they press against a nerve it might give rise to pain.

Ganglion cysts are common if there was a previous history of injury at that site and also if the patient has osteoarthritis.

I would like to suggest that kindly visit a general surgeon regarding this.
He /She shall do a detailed clinical examination to confirm the diagnosis. An X ray and ultrasound will help to determine if the swelling is solid or contains fluid. An aspiration and examination of the fluid in the cyst shall help in confirming the diagnosis further.

If the swelling is causing discomfort he may suggest:

1. Draining the fluid from the cyst and giving steroid injection locally to prevent recurrence .
2. In some recurrent conditions the general surgeon may recommend to get it operated also.
Donot worry it is a very minor procedure.

Hope this answers your query. Don't worry .
