Posted on Mon, 23 Mar 2015
Question: Ive had dark green almost grey poop for the last 5 days or so. Ive also had excessive flatus/gas, a cold/sore throat/cough/runny nose for about a week. Could this be related? Other ideas? Ive attached a photo. Sorry =/ its not as green in this photo as it has been the last few days and today.

Brief Answer:
Infection, melena

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

This could probably be due to infection.
It may not be related to the cold/sore throat/cough/runny nose.

Your stool resembles melena also though it is less likely as melena would be more blackish. Melena is a condition in which the stool appears black due to internal bleed.
I would advise you to get a stool analysis and a complete blood count done.
This will help to know whether you have infection and any bleeding inside.

I hope that answers your question.
Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.

I forgot to mention that ive also had nausea and dizziness. I do think the dizziness could be related to the cold - the dizziness is exspecially worse when I blow my nose, etc. but the nausea started 2-3 days ago. Ive also had a bit of heartburn. Thank you.

The poop is more green and does not resemble coffee grounds so wouldnt that rule out i ternal bleeding? Would bleeding cause nausea?

Thanks .

Brief Answer:
Yes greenish stool is not due to internal bleed

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
The picture you posted looked dark. That is why I discussed about melena too.
Greenish stool does not however indicate internal bleed.

The nausea could be due to gastroesophageal reflux disease which is also causing heartburn or it could be due to stomach bug which might be the cause for greenish stool also. As suggested earlier, you can get a stool test done.
Yes internal bleeding can cause nausea. But as said above- Greenish stool does not however indicate internal bleed.

You can take a course of probiotics till then,
Since you have heartburn too, take Prilosec also.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.
