Suggest Treatment For Fever, Nausea, Vomiting And Headache

default
Posted on Mon, 17 Aug 2015
Question: My 6 year old daughter came home from camp today with fever (101 degrees), nausea, vomiting, and headache. She started going to this camp three days ago, and she has swam in a freshwater lake. With the recent news of a 14 year old boy in MN being infected by a brain degrading amoeba, which ultimately proved fatal, I am worried. On the other hand, I realize this type of infection is quite rare, particularly in the northern states (we are in MN). I'm wondering if I should do anything. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Get her evaluated by a pediatrician urgently

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Fever due to any cause may be associated with headache.Even vomiting can be there in few benign conditions like viral gastritis.
But when there are symptoms like fever, headache and vomiting the possibility of brain infection must be rule out by clinical examination.
I would like to know if the headache is associated with fever only or it is there without fever also.
Presence of headache when the child is not febrile goes in favor of brain infection.
Apart from amoeba there are other bacteria or viruses which can cause brain infection and may present with these symptoms.
I would suggest you to give her acetaminophen/paracetamol for fever and to get her clinically evaluated by a pediatrician.

Please do ask if you have any more query.
Regards
