default
Posted on Mon, 26 Sep 2016
Question: My 2 years old daughter had temperature and bit cold. We gave Calpol 120 at 8.30pm. we didn't give second dosage as she slept.
In early morning, she was crying, found that she had temperature. After giving her Calpol 120, she vomited. She had cough also.
Any suggestions ? Any separate medicine needs to be given for coughing ?

Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on Health care magic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms occur due to certain viral infections. Irrespective of treatment they usually last for 5-7 days.

If your child has fever with temperature more than 100°F, you need to give paracetamol (Calpol) to bring down. If paracetamol is not effective in bringing down the temperature, you need to use Meftal-P (mefenamic acid) which is more effective. The minimum gap between two doses of Crocin is 4-6 hours. The doses of Crocin and Meftal P are independent of each other. Minimum gap between doses of Meftal P is 6-8 hours. However, I do not think that they would be needed to be used simultaneously. Also use tepid sponging.

Giving steam inhalation to your child helps in reducing the congestion and cough. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief.

Give her colorful fruits and vegetables regularly. They contain vitamins, minerals and plenty of antioxidants which should help in boosting the immunity of your child.

Hopefully that would help. Feel free to write back in case of further queries.

Thanks!!, temperature is 99 and is not 100 or beyond 100. Is it OK to give Calpol ? Should I continue giving her Calpol. Is it ok to give citrus fruits like Mausambi ?

Brief Answer:
Tepid sponging should suffice.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks again for writing back. If temperature more than 100°F, give Calpol, else, tepid sponging should suffice.

It is absolutely ok to give citrus fruits like mausambi. Any sort of fruits may be given without worries.

Regards

Brief Answer:
Calpol does not help in reducing cough.Tepid sponging will not worsen cough

Detailed Answer:
Yes, I remember that. I have already mentioned that giving steam inhalation to your child helps in reducing the congestion and cough. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. You can give cetirizine syrup once daily for next few days in case she has runny nose.
