Suggest Treatment For Fatty Liver

Question: I am 40, female and love red wine. Normally weigh 8 stone and am 5' tall. I've drank from being a teenager. Some weeks I can drink a bottle a night other weeks maybe only 2-3 bottles with a few nights off. I have chewed XXXXXXX gum for 10 years and am addicted to it, pretty much chewing it if I'm awake unless I'm eating. I had a c-section 12 weeks ago (never drank whilst pregnant by the way) and tend to feel like there is something stuck under my breast bone. Also often need to burp. The burp seems to give temporary relief. It's not pain as such just discomfort. I tend to feel fine in the morning until I eat or chew the gum. My toilet habits are what I would deem normal for me. Loose and darker if I drink wine or eat spicy food. Normal if I dont. My Bilarubin was 52 pre pregnancy, 15 during pregnancy and has now crept back to 31 with a cholesterol level of 5.7. An ultrasound 2 years ago showed a fatty liver. No jaundice and the only back pain seems to be lower back pain as was the case with the weight of my pregnancy. My mother was a regular drinker and died at 62 from biliary tree cancer. Her liver was so damaged that when an exploratory examination was carried out a piece of her liver broke away. Do I have to stop enjoying my wine? Can I work at reducing it instead of abstaining? Is the Nicorette a contributing factor? I have two young children and want to see them grow, I'm quite afraid. Can a fatty liver repair itself? I know reading this you would think (stupid woman just give them both up) but I enjoy the wine and whilst I agree giving up the nicorette is proving hard. Please help.

Brief Answer:
You should give up wine with slowly decreasing Nicorette.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to H.C.M.

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

I see similar cases amongst people who visit my clinic.

You have long history of wine drinking with high bilirubin with fatty liver on Ultra sound.

You should stop wine drinking rather than decreasing for your long and healthy life.

Because this wine-

1) This wine cause obesity and obesity carries its own risks, including heart disease and some cancers.

2) Disrupt your 'sex hormones', with the possibility of loss of fertility.

3) Cause chronic liver damage.

4) Chronic gastritis as already you are also suffering from burp.

If you stop wine then your fatty liver will recover almost fully.

Now comes on Nicorette-

You should try to decreasing this and finally stop.

I understand that this is difficult but this is possible under Psychiatrist.

Because it causes
A sore mouth or ulcers.
Feeling sick.
Stomach discomfort including burp (As you have)

Thank you

What do you suggest is causing the discomfort? Do you suggest it is burp?

Brief Answer:
This discomfort is due to acidity and fatty liver.

Detailed Answer:

I feel that this discomfort is due to acidity and fatty liver. Acidity too can produce burps.

Avoid tea, coffee, oily and spicy food.
This will decrease discomfort due to acidity and also helpful in recovery from fatty liver.

Eat plenty of salads in diet. Consume plenty of water(2-3 lts/day).

I also advise an antacid to my patients like Tablet- Pan D- (Pantoprazole 40 mg + Domperidone 10 mg) twice a day empty stomach for 5 to 7 day.

Along with these follow routine physical exercises for 30 to 40 mins.

You will be fine soon.

All the best for long and healthy life.

Thanks.

Do you think the constant chewing of gum is also causing acid and do you believe even if liver has been fatty for a couple of years it can repair itself?

Brief Answer:
Yes, after couple of years of stopping alcohol fatty liver usually recover.

Detailed Answer:

Thanks for follow up.

Yes, after couple of years of stopping alcohol fatty liver usually recover.

Constant chewing of Nicotine gum ( it contains nicotine) is also cause of acidity and make symptoms worse in patient already suffering from gastritis and this gastritis is a common cause of burp. .

Wine also is a cause of acidity because of its content Alcohol and lead to gastritis.

So kindly stop wine for your long and healthy life.
