Question: For the past 4 months, I am farting more. Usuall I am not drinking more water. Can you please suggest me some food or diet to overcome that.

Thanks for your query.

The causes of excessive farting can be:
- Intolerance to some foods or beverages that cause gases in the intestines
- Aerophagia meaning inadvertent swallowing of air
- Anxiety and stress
- subacute intestinal infection not causing classical symptoms of infection where the gas producing bacteria are more than the normal residing bacteria of intestine.

We have to take all such factors into consideration as you are suffering for 4 months, a long time to have a problem, hence first of find the cause, treat it and maintain the new environment. This is where the role of food and diet comes.

Suggested treatment:
- First of all you have to practically make a list of foods, eatables, beverages that cause you more farting and have to totally stop them. This is most important part as this is absolutely an individual response to a particular constituent of food and / or beverage.
- It is always better to get the stool test done on 3 consecutive days and to get treated as per the reports. And also Ultrasonography of the abdomen to rule ou gall bladder stone and other possible causes .
- A course of an antibiotic active against intestinal bacteria, Metronidazole sometimes helps in many of the patient and you need a valid prescription of a local Doctor.
- Probiotics daily can be continued in the form of capsules, yogurt/curd and so on.
- You can take activated charcoal tablets whenever needed.
- Preparations containing digestive enzymes in syrup form can be taken, although they alone do not help.
- Control of the stress and anxiety and the aerophagia thereupon is part of the success-story.
