Suggest Treatment For Excessive Bone Growth In Gums And Upper Palate

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Oct 2015
Question: I am female, 68 years old. I have excessive bones growing in my gums & upper palate. I have had three surgeries since January 2015. The bones keep growing back & are very painful. This condition has existed for several years. But, since I needed partial dentures, because of losing teeth after root canals, I had the surgeries. My maxilla-facial surgeon has also had blood work, urine tests & complete body & cranial scans done. I do not seem to have Pajet's disease. I live in Canada. Can anyone give me some help?

Dear Dr. Heijebu,

Since I live in Quebec, Canada, all the medical reports are in French only. I will tell you what the maxilla-facial surgeon & my GP for for me as being in the reports:

1) the bone pieces removed from my gums had no sign of as cancer growths
2) the blood & urine tests were normal. Only abnormalities were indications of a slight thyroid deficiency. My GP re-run the tests & since I haven't heard from him; he must be satisfied with the results. I am not on any thyroid medication. The only other thing shows a slight abnormality in kidney function. For this reason I do not take any anti-inflammatory drugs. I did take estrogen for several years, because, I had a complete hysterectomy at 30 yrs of age.
3) the scan reports showed normal bone structure for a woman of my age. No osteoporosis present. The only thing the scan showed was arthrosis in my back. I had surgery for 2 herniated disks at L5 & S1.
Sorry, but, that's all the info I have. I hope that someone can give me a clue as to what other tests I could ask my doctors to perform & find out what kind of painful disease I have. I want the bumpy bones to stop growing in my gums.
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Possible Maxillary hyperostosis.?Need further assessment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Madam.

I understand your concern.

I apologize for the delayed response.

In case of negative reports for bone tumors, the risk now seem to lessen a bit.

You possibly seem to have maxillary hyperostosis.

This is an idiopathic overgrowth of the bone.

I advise you to get serum PTH, PTH-rp and calcium levels tested.

Additionally the cause of bone overgrowth has to be evaluated.

It is important to rule out secondary nerve compression.

For this, I advise you to get a CT of the paranasal sinuses and maxillary bone in particular.

This can help to guide us further.

Post your further queries if any.
Thank you

Thank you Dr Heijebu. I will follow up with my GP as soon as I can get an appointment. Normal waiting time for an appointment is 3 months, because he has a caseload of + 2500 patients. This is our government health care system. I can't afford private health care.
