Suggest Treatment For Esophagitis

Posted on Fri, 16 Jan 2015
Question: Hello I recently had an EGD done and it was discovered that I have esophagitis and a nodule or scar tissue of some sort in my lower esophagus . The doctor didn't seem to know what it was but was able to biopsy it. I am still waiting for the results. He referred to it as scar tissue but it looks like a lump or nodule to me (I have a picture of it). My question is what are the chances of this being benign. I am a 37 year old female with family history of gerd and Barrett's.

Brief Answer:
Await Biopsy

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing in

What was the indication of EGD in your case ?

Have had a look at the pics, though a real time endoscopy and a biopsy are confirmatory, from the look of it it does appear benign.

Keeping apart the family history, do you have history of difficulty in swallowing or blood in vomitus ?

I would prefer wait for the biopsy rather than comment from morphology.

Hope this helps

No difficulty swallowing or blood just frequent acid reflux which can be controlled by diet. A lump in the throat feeling and right upper quadrant pain the comes and goes for the past 1 1/2 years. from looking at the picture does it look like scar tissue? My doc said scar tissue but it looks like a pretty well defined lump to me. Still waiting on biopsy results after 10 days now. How common are these sort of findings in your experience? Also wanted to mention that I'm doing gluten free and 40 mg of omeperzole a day and feeling pretty good.

Brief Answer:
Not frequent

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for your followup

With the symptoms that you mention this seems benign

Yes it appears a well defined lump in the picture rather than a scar tissue
Yet I would comment on the real time video or the biopsy report

Patiently wait for the biopsy report and we will find a solution to the same

Continue gluten free and Omeprazole no harm

These type of findings are not very frequent in our day to day practice
Let us wait for the biopsy report

Wishing you a healthy life ahead
