Suggest Treatment For Esophageal Varices Inspite Of Having Liver Cirrhosis

Question: I have Varices, and I am going in the hospital tomorrow morning to have them checked. When I had them
checked before, I went in the office (a cubacule). Then suggested I go this time to the hospital. I was told
that if they looked bad, they would band them. I don't know just what they mean when they say that! What
and how do they do this procedure? The doctor I had two previous appts, had a very bad bedside manner,
and what he said to my friend that took me, said that nothing could be done as I was to old and the cirrocis
was to far gone! My daughter took me to his office the next day and he told us that I had 90 percent of my
liver that was working. I said, I think that is pretty good as I am an 82 year old female and very active. So
I decided that I wouldn't go back to him. I have another doctor of whom I like, so I decided to change. I know
that this is quite a letter, but I would like to know a little more about this. I just had an ultra-sound on my
liver and it hasn't changed in the last year and a half! What would you say Doctor?

Brief Answer:
Banding reduces the chance of variceal bleeding.

Detailed Answer:
Hi. Thanks for the query. By varices, I assume that these are esophageal varices. They are common in people with cirrhosis. When the liver is cirrhotic, the portal venous pressure rises and collateral channels open up. One of them are these varices. Because they are in the esophagus, they have a tendency to bleed and cause blood vomiting. Therefore they should be controlled with banding. In this procedure, small rubber bands are applied around these varices endoscopically, thereby reducing the chance of bleeding. Drugs are also used to reduce the portal pressure.
