default
Posted on Tue, 1 Dec 2015
Question: I was diagnosed with epididymitis that the doctor assumed was caused by chlamydia 10 days ago and I was given an initial shot of antibiotics and a prescription for 100mg of doxycycline twice a day for 7 days . Ive been off of the antibiotic for 3 days now and im still having pain in my testicle. also the tail of my epididymis swells and feels firm when I masturbate. Should I be worried about the swelling? should I see a doctor again?

Brief Answer:
Stop masturbating for 2 weeks

Good day and thank you for being with Healthcare magic!

Is the swelling getting worse or is it better now compared to before antibiotics? After infection, it will take sometime for the body to recover completely. You need to let your body rest and abstain from ejaculating for at least 2 weeks or until the pain and swelling are gone. Anti oxidants like ascorbic acid or vitamin C can help hasten the healing. If there is pain or if your symptoms persist, it is prudent to go back to your urologist for follow up.

I noticed the swelling of the tail of the epididymis before i went to see a doctor and now that i took the antibiotics im having less pain in my testicle but it is not completely gone, and the swelling seems to be about the same but it only flares up while masturbating. So is it normal to still have some pain in the testicle even after antibiotic treatment? Do you think my prescription was enough to get rid of the infection? most things ive read online say 100mg doxycycline twice a day for at least 10 days, not 7 like i was prescribed.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for your follow up question. The absence of pain means that the infection has been taken care of by the antibiotics. Yes I believe that the 7 day regimen is sufficient in your case. Pain/soreness after masturbating means that the epididymis is still a little inflamed. The size going back to normal would take a while and sometimes stays like that. To be really sure I would suggest getting a scrotal ultrasound to look inside the scrotum to rule out abscess formation etc.
