Question: My 1.2 year(weight 8.2kg) old child is suffering from eosinophilia. His CBC test shows high eosinophil count of 760. He also has enlarged gland in the back of his head. My doctor asked me to start diethylecabamazine citrate treatment ( 80 mg 3 times a day for 21 days). After administering second dose child is restless and crying continuously. Kindly suggest should I continue the treatment or reduce the amount of dosage?

Brief Answer:
that is too high a dose

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
I have seen the reports.
Definitely the eosinophil count is high.
The drug you are giving is ok.
But dose is too high.
Only 20 mg three times is the right dose.
Stop the drug for 2 days and then restart from 20mg.
But don't worry
These symptoms will settle once stopping the high dose.
Wishing your child good health and speedy recovery.

Regards
Dr Arun

My child has a low weight ( 8.2 kgs) for his age(14 month) and is gaining weight very slowly. He eats less but we feed him multiple times in a day. He has a weak stomach and gets diarrhea and indigestion frequently. Is that due to eosinophilia? Also I am worried about the swollen gland at the back of the head. My doctor said that swollen gland will be reduced after diethylcarbamazine treatment and also suggested some vitamin supplements. What should i do?

Brief Answer:
could be allergy, eosinophil related

Detailed Answer:
Yes there is a possibility that his frequent indigestion could be related to eosinophilia .
Don't worry.
Complete treatment but with correct dose of Diethylcarbamazine.
Continue vitamin supplements too.
