Brief Answer:
Will depend on symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Enlargement of prostate on ultrasound scans is noted in most men after they have crossed 50 years of age.
The prostate gland is situated below the bladder, and only in a few patients will this enlargement cause symptoms necessary to meet a urologist. If your father has any sensation of not voiding urine comfortably, or if he has sense of urine residue in bladder even after voiding or if he cannot hold urine till he reaches a toilet, or if he gets up frequently at night, - then he will need treatment.
There are medicines to reduce the size of the prostate and also to improve his symptoms, but they will be required only if he has any trouble in the first place.
A simple test to know if he is voiding urine well is by getting a test called Uroflowmetry done, where he has to pass urine into a machine as if he is voiding at home, and if he passes over 300 ml of urine, with a reasonably good flow rate of over 15 ml/ sec, it means he has no significant obstruction and need not take any medication. You are welcome to get this test done somewhere in XXXXXXX and scan and send the report so that we can give a better opinion.
In some men, the enlargement may also be a source of malignancy, especially if there is a family history of prostate cancer, and in selected patients with prostate enlargement, we ask for an investigation called Serum Prostate specific Antigen to assess the chances of harbouring a prostate cancer.
His hernia operation of over 15 years ago is probably not relevant at this juncture.
Hope I have been able to help you.
Regards and best wishes.

Brief Answer:
burning urination not likely to be due to prostate

Detailed Answer:
You can get PSA tested but you should know right away that it can be high even in conditions where there is no cancer and can be low even when cancer is present.
More important would be the uroflowmetry that I suggested. If that is normal, most likely he will not need any treatment.
Hope I have been of help.
