Suggest Treatment For Enlarged Prostate

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Sep 2014
Question: Hi. I am 28 year old male. 5"4" 65kg. Recently I had been diagnosed with enlarged prostate. I have been taking ayurvedic treatment for that. 3 months back when I was playing tennis, I streched my groin area. The doctor did physical exam and told me I have hernia. The pain is not excrutiating. I am confused what to do. Should I get the surgery done for hernia. Does enlarged prostate complicate things. Should I wait for ayurvedic treatment for enlarged prostate to get over.

Brief Answer:
Meticulous Examination and Preventive Measures

Detailed Answer:
Dear

Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with your health concern and I will address your complaint in two different aspects:

A

1. Since development of hernia on one side increases the risk of developing hernia on the other side, called as Companion hernia thus detailed examination is necessary, so consult with your Doctor [preferably General Surgeon] about the same, and moreover because its a mechanical problem, SURGICAL repair will be good.
2. Any increased pressure, strain or injury, causing weakness of the abdominal wall in the inguinal area?
3. Symptoms associated with hernia or bulge?? any discomfort, pain
4. Avoid lifting heavy weight (always bend your knees and not your waist), stop smoking (cough can aggravate inguinal hernia), take fiber rich diet (which will prevent constipation), wear loose and light clothes which don't apply too much of pressure on the affected area.

B

Since the disease is of old age and almost never seen below fifty years of age, thus meticulous examination by Surgeon is deemed necessary [since occurring at this early age]

Any associated symptoms related with enlarged prostate, like:
i. increased frequency of micturiton?
ii. any urgency to pass urine?
iii.Difficulty in micturition/painful urination/loss of bladder control?
PS. are there irritative or obstructive symptoms more, which will give slight idea about the affected lobe in prostate enlargement.
iv. Any routine Examination(s) done:
. Blood for Hb%, TLC/DLC/ESR/ urea and sugar?
. Urine examination for culture and sensitivity?
PS. any special tests [ultrasound/PSA] done for evaluation?

~ Avoid drinking excess liquids [alcohol, caffeine] /water in evening/night, i.e. let the bladder remain empty at night.Limit your intake of liquids in the evening, especially drinks containing alcohol and caffeine.
~ If on any drug therapy which may aggravate the problem, kindly consult your attending physician, commonly used are: diuretics [water pill], cold medications, anti depressants which can weaken the bladder muscle and narrow the opening of prostate.
PS. Ask your doctor for exhaustive list

Take: old brown rice, moong dal soup, horse gram, garlic, fruits, bitter gourd, XXXXXXX ghee, oil, barley water,mosambi/orange juice, sesame brittle [til ki gajak]

Avoid: newly harvested rice, salt, black gram, refined powder, jaggery, curd, cakes, pastry, cheese, potato, semolina, chickpea [besan] flour, tomato, vinegar, lemons, tea/coffee/constipating food and hot spices [garam masala].

You may ask for Prescription Medicine like Prosteez or Himplasia, Chandraprabha vati, XXXXXXX parpati, yav kshar, XXXXXXX assav after consulting your attending Doctor.

PS. If your symptoms are not severe then watchful waiting and Medicine are sufficient but remain under regular supervision of your Doctor.

I dont have severe symptoms. I wanted to know if prostate problem is reversible. I also have hernia and want to treat my prostate completely before hernia surgery.

I used to have pain after urination but I dont have tht now after I started taking some ayurvedic medcine. Now I have mild feeling on tip of penis. This usually happens when I have a sexual dream without ejaculation. I have that symptom as long as I do not ejaculate. If I ejaculate I dont have symptoms at all and I urinate 7 to 8 times in 24 hours. Only problem is at the end of the stream the urine drips. I have heard that shilajit and saw palmetto are good medixine dor prostate.

Brief Answer:
Assessment and Management.

Detailed Answer:
Dear

Thanks for reverting back with your concern(s)

1. Prostate problem is preventable and reversible through effective dietary regime and a healthy lifestyle, remember BPH is a condition [mainly due to lack of essential nutrients] and not a disease.

. Use of anti-inflammatory diet [ which is rich in phytonutrients] i.e. consuming fresh fruit and vegetables, along with herbs such as cinnamon [tejpatra], turmeric [haldi], ginger [adrak], garlic [lehsun] are ideal choices, cabbage/ brocolli contain
. Eliminate processed grains, dairy products.
. Lycopene is an anti oxidant normally found in prostate, thus consume more of grapefruits, tomato, red pepper & raspberries.
PS. saw palmetto, act as an anti-oxidants [rich in phytochemicals] to help the body in the detoxification cycles necessary for a healthy prostate.
. Prostate problem/disorder are commonly associated with zinc deficiency, thus zinc rich diet is an essential part of treatment.
. Omega 3 supplement.

2. Since enlarged prostate is an aggravating factor [pressure while urinating] for the development of hernia thus you have to check with your general surgeon regularly.

3. Going by your symptoms of pain/sexual dreams, possible explanation could be:

i. Prostatitis or any other cause of your problem [physical examination along with blood and urine tests.
ii. During sexual dreams, ejaculation is mainly processed by prostate [2/3 of the volume], so if you are not ejaculating the fluid will continue to rise and will cause discomfort. [reason of being asymptomatic after ejaculation]

PS. Consultation & Examination with Urologist is recommended.

4. Frequent urination could be due to:
. high blood sugar
. cold weather
. stress [enlarged prostate]
. compulsive water drinking
. excess of calcium or less of potassium

PS. treatment will depend upon the cause.

5. You can buy shilajjet capsules since they are indicated in stress anxiety and prostate problems and as saw palmetto has anti oxidant properties [as described earlier] you can take both.
