Suggest Treatment For Enlarged Lymph Node In Neck

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Jun 2016
Question: I have slightly enlarged lymph nodes in neck, swollen glands, small lump in back of throat, and irritated throat for almost 2 weeks off and on, should I see my ENT for a HPV cancer screening?
I have never smoked and I do not drink.
My PCP says it is a throat infection when visiting 10 days ago.

Brief Answer:
Wait for a couple of weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Wait for a couple of weeks. A severe sore throat has similar symptoms that will subside with treatment.

2. Review your medication with your doctor. A broad spectrum antibiotic, anti allergic, anti inflammatory medication and medicated gargles should be taken.

3. You can get tested for HPV, however the detection of HPV does not signify that you will develop HPV related cancers. Early detection improves cure rates.

4. This is more likely to be a common sore throat than anything else.

5. A throat swab should be done. Upload the results here for discussing further treatment options.

Hello,

I have had a strep test and it was negative. I have uploaded a picture of the lump. It is on the oropharynx, right side of the picture.

Brief Answer:
Treat this lump as mild Granular Pharyngitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. it is good to hear that your strep test is negative.

2. The lump on the posterior pharyngeal wall on the right side looks like inflamed lymphoid tissue in the lateral pharyngeal band.

3. This requires investigation only if it grows or causes symptoms.

4. Treatment should be on the lines of treatment for mild Granular Pharyngitis.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
