Suggest Treatment For Edema While On Depakote

Question: I just wrote all of this. I have to repeat it. I am on extended release depakote 750 mg. pm. I am taking this since I had seizures when I was withdrawing from klonopin. Since then I've reinstated klonopin and am still tapering. Now I have very low sodium and I'm water logged. Legs all swollen but my doctor does not want me to take a water pill due to low sodium. I don't know what to do. If I reduce the depakote by one pill will this help. He wants me to do only 6 liters of liquid a day which I have not done yet since I enjoy herbal teas and juices, but I'll have to do this. What about the depakote?

Brief Answer:
Could be due to SIADH

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. You should not stop depakote. Rather, ask your doctor whether potassium sparing diuretics like spironolactone can be given. Also ask if he suspects SIADH, a condition wherein there is fluid retention causing solutions low sodium even though the amount of sodium is actually adequate. It would be helpful if you could let me know the creatinine level.

Let me know if I could help further.

My creatinine is low. it's 0.53 and normal is o.60-1.20 mg/dl What is SIADH?
My sodium levels are: 128LL normal is (135-146mmol/L)

Also,I'm severly constipated from klonopin and hydrocodeine.I saw a g.i. doctor who wanted me to try Amitiza. I tried it last night and that together with herbal laxatives made me have b.m.'s all night. He told me no bad reactions with the meds I'm taking but depakote er. has to be watched closely when taking it with klonopin. I've heard from two other doctors that depakote er will cause low sodium.

Thanks for writing back.

You can find more about SIADH at:

For the constipation I would insist you to have plenty of green leafy vegetables as well as fiber supplements.
