Suggest Treatment For Ear Blockage And Difficulty In Hearing

Question: Hi Doctor,

My mother is 63 year old active lady. Recently after attending a noisy wedding she started complaining about blockage of her ears and her disability to hear things clearly. (blockage means - as if there was some liquid in the ear and when she turns her head such that her ear faces the ground, there comes a sound of doob doob, twice or thrice, like some liquid flowing outward from inside, but nothing comes out).

She started reacting sharply to noises which earlier never bothered her. When she was taken to an ENT doctor, the doctor said that her right ear drum was open and the left also has a similar problem to some extent. After taking the drugs for the problem for 4 days, she now complains of heaviness of head, eyes, nose. She feels that it is not just the ear problem. Could it be something else also. The medicines she was given are -

Ginkgo Biloba and Mecobalamin Capsules (Ginkoba-M FROM micro labs) 1- 1- 1(10 days)
Azithromycin Tablets(Azicip-500 cipla) 0 - 0 - 1 (after dinner - 6 days)
IVEPRED 4mg 1 - 0 - 0 (after breakfast - 10 days)

Thanks in advance.
Also kindly suggest any tests that can be carried out to rule out possibility of other complications. And please let us know how the ear drum opens up without any physical impact.

Brief Answer:
nothing to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic,

The hole in the ear is because of ear infection. Ear infection occurs secondarily to a nose infection. The infected ear bursts open rupturing the drum. This is how a hole forms in the drum. Usually in majority of cases the drum heals on its own without any cmplications. Sometimes the hole persists leading long standing discharge from the ear.

Her other symptoms of heaviness of the head and eyes and nose may be due to sinusitis. Since she is already on antibiotics , the sinus infection will be taken care of. Along with the medicines that she is currently taking I would suggest decongestant nose drops like otrivin. These drops help to keep the nose and sinuses open thereby help to control sinusitis. Also these drops help to open the eustachian tubes which in turn helps to control the ear infection. She should instill 3 drops in each nostril 3 times a day for 6 days and follow it up with steam inhalation everytime.

Antibiotic ear drops will also help her. Please talk to your doctor about them.

She should keep her ears dry and should not let water to get into her ears. she should not probe her ears with buds or other things.

Please follow up with your ENT doctor soon so as to know the progress in her condition. There is no need for any other tests now.

Regards,
Dr Rajkishori Godhi
