Suggest Treatment For Dry Cough

Question: Over 5 weeks ago I came down with a cough which I am fighting till today. Initially they put me on Zithro 5-day pack. When that did not help last week they put me on a 9 day dose of prednisone, which I completed yesterday. I am continuing to use an Advair inhaler. Although my cough has improved, I still have trouble breathing when talking and will break out into coughing fits, releasing a small amount of phlegm. I have had a history of bronchitis and respiratory infections, normally treated with antibiotics, but nothing to this extent of being so difficult to overcome. My energy level seems to be much lower due to this. I have put off doing manual projects at work for fear of over exerting myself. If I was to push myself harder at work physically, could this hurt my recovery?

Brief Answer:
Healthy diet and breathing exercises recommended

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for choosing health care magic for your query.

I have gone through your query and I understand that dry cough can be very annoying.

You have been treated with antibiotics to which you did not respond because most probably your cough is due to allergic bronchitis.

That is the reason you have responded to steroids.

But the triggers for your cough have to be investigated.

Please make a note of events that are causing discomfort and triggering cough and you should avoid those situations till you recover completely.

Few more tips:
1. Take a healthy diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables which will replenish your energy stores and speed up recovery.

2. Avoid smoking and exposure to any kind of irritant that might trigger your cough.

3. You can try some breathing exercises that will help increasing your lung capacities.

4. You can take Zedex cough syrup 2tsps thrice daily for 7 days to get rid of the dry cough.

If you do not recover within three days, a chest x ray and sputum culture is required to rule out other causes.

I hope I have cleared your doubts.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks

Dr. Hiremath-

Before I came down with the cough I was sneezing and had a runny nose for several days. Then I developed a minor cough which developed into a serious cough. I am highly sensitive to cold air.....if I were to jog outside in air too cold I would come down with bronchitis almost immediately. I did have a chest x-ray before I started the Z-Pack which was reportedly clear (no signs of pneumonia).
If I exterted myself vigorously during manual labor or exercise, could this be dangerous? Also, is there an XXXXXXX name for the cough syrup you recommended? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Zedex is dextramethophan and bromhexine

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome back.

I am glad your chest x ray was clear.

Please avoid cold environments and protect yourself adequately when exposed to cold air.

I suggest you avoid strenuous exercise till you are completely fine.

Zedex is a combination of dextrmethorphan and bromhexine which will loosen the phlegm and also reduce your dry cough.

Wishing you faster recovery.

Thanks
