Suggest Treatment For Dry Cough

Question: I've had a persistent dry, hacking cough for about 4 weeks. Antiobiotics, nasal sprays, and antihistamines have not worked. Doctor has listened to my lungs: it's not pneumonia. Here's my query: I started Adderall XR 5 mg about 6 weeks ago. I'm wondering if this is a side effect of Adderall? I know that Adderall can cause dry mouth: perhaps it's causing dry throat? My psychiatrist looked up Adderall side-effects and didn't see dry hacking cough listed. But it makes sense to me: Adderall dries me out. And then my body secretes mucus to compensate, leading to post-nasal drip, which then further tickles my throat. My question is this: assuming it's adderall, are there things I can do to reduce the cough? Saline rinses, smart water, anything like that?

Brief Answer:
Xerostomia

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

I have gone through the side effect profile of Adderal XR and it is not shown to cause dry cough. However it does cause dry mouth and dyspepsia. Gastritis is one another cause for unexplained cough in some patients. After going through your history here is what I recommend

1. Vitamin C lozenges are the best way to tackle xerostomia. I recommend that you chew on one every once in 6 hours to keep your mouth and throat wet
2. I also recommend that you take antacid like tab ranitidine or tab omeprazole once a day and see if cough reduces.
3. I would also like you to take a stronger anti histamine like Tab Fexofenadine and a cough suppressant like Syrup linctus codeine. This should make you asymptomatic.

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me

I wish you good health and speedy recovery
