Question: I got a dog bite on my leg today morning while I was jogging. Slight blood did come at two places where probably the teeth stuck. Please advice if I need to take the injections. I have attached a snap of the same for reference.

Brief Answer:
Yes you need to take both anti rabies vaccine and anti rabies serum

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic,

I have gone through your history and the photograph attached, I feel very sorry for the incidence.

Dog is a known reservoir of rabies virus and can transmit this disease by biting. Rabies is 100% fatal but 100% preventable by proper and adequate treatment.

If I would have been your treating doctor, I would I have suggested
1. Washing the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 15 mins.
2.Anti rabies vaccine like Inj Rabipur, 1 ml, IM over the deltoid on days 0 (Day of first shot), 3,7,14 and 28.
3.A single shot of Anti rabies serum (Rabies Immunoglobulins) should be taken in and around the biting site.
4.Inj TT, 0.5 ml
5.A course of antibiotics like Tab Augmentin, 625 mg, twice daily for 5 days.

I suggest you to consult your doctor at the earliest for aforementioned treatment. If you have any further query feel free to post them.
Thank you.

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX
I went to Mahaveer XXXXXXX hospital before viewing your response and they have given me a TT and X-Prab 1 ml injection. They did not give me the single shot of anti rabies serum that you have referred to. Is it still advisable to take the serum shot?
I shall take the antibiotics that you have recommended but need your advise on the serum shot.

This happened at 7AM today morning.

Brief Answer:
X-Prab is a anti rabies serum

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome Back,

X-Prab is a anti rabies serum which is to be given around the wound which will neutralize the rabies virus if any.

Better to take antibiotic which will take care of local infection. You have to complete the full course of anti rabies vaccine as per the schedule.
Thank you.

Now I am confused. Doctor in Mahaveer XXXXXXX hospital has given me Xprab injection which had a vaccination card on which they have marked the dates for the next 4 injections. It reads on the same card that it is a Rabies Vaccine, Human I.P. [Freeze-Dried (Vero Cell) for human use].

Is this not the right Rabies vaccine as per your note? If this is a rabies vaccine and I continue to take the rest 4 as per the schedule prescribed, do you suggest I should take the anti rabies serum still around the wound. If yes, then can I get it in the evening still as the dog bit in the morning? The reason I ask is, is there any time duration that needs to be considered to take the medicine around the wound as the wound on my leg has dried already mostly.

Brief Answer:
You were most likely given the vaccine, need anti rabies serum now

Detailed Answer:
Hello

As per the information provided, you were most likely given anti rabies vaccine. X-prab is actually anti-rabies serum. But going by your description, it seems like the injection which you were given is the vaccine and not the anti-rabies serum. I hope they have given to your shoulder. If they have given it to your shoulder, then it is surely the vaccine.

Now, You require anti rabies serum like Berirab P (HRIG) or Equirab (ERIG) which should be taken around the bite site with in 24 hours.
It would also be more clearer to me if you could probably take a snap of the injection you were given so that I can see if its a vaccine or antiserum.
This is available at kempegowda hospital, XXXXXXX You can visit the anti rabies clinic of KIMS.
Thank you.
