Question: Hi I am a 48 year old male, my diet is low in fruits and vegetables as I dont really like them. I have suffered from bowel troubles on and off for 10 years which can last for weeks or months, they cause diarrhoea and intermittent constipation. The last couple of months I have had a particularly bad episode with blood in my stools and low levels of abdominal pain, I am overwight by about 20kgs.

Brief Answer:
Add fibers in your diet

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for using HCM to post your question.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

So from what I read, these are my thoughts and advises:
-- You understand that the diet in low fruits and vegetables has affected in the health of your bowel. Having a diet rich in fibers can avoid constipation. So if you can add in it psyllium fibers, may help. Also, drink plenty of fluids.
-- The blood in your stool may be from hemorrhoids which are caused by constipation mostly. After confirmin by a doctor that you have them, you can treat them with local creams and sit baths.
-- You will need to do a complete blood count test so you check if losing blood has lead to iron deficiency anemia.
-- Considering the symptoms you will maybe think of doing a colonoscopy to rule out/ prevent colon cancer. It is generally done every 5 years after age of 55, but for some people who have symproms, helps to start earlier.

Hope this is helpful and I unswered your questions.
