Question: I spend the night in emergency because I have had severe diarrhea for 4 days and am not getting any better, I can not eat everything goes right through me. Today I can not eat anything as it makes my stomache really hurt and I have diarrhea hourly. I now have a terrible headache I have no fever but my legs sweat and then I get cold. I am 4 days now and not getting any better, at the hospital they said my white blood cell count is up, but sent me home and said unless I had a fever or blood, let it run its course. I can not eat and have severe diarreaha for the 4th straight day and night..what should I do?

Brief Answer:
Infectious diarrhea, likely

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Based on your description it appears to be gastroenteritis. Blood in stool, high fever and raised TLC count would indicate infectious diarrhea and antibiotics would be required as part of the treatment. If they are not present then fluid replenishment with ORS/Gastrolyte etc, anti spasmodic medication and anti secretory agents would be enough and antibiotics may not be required. Abdominal cramping , nausea is common with diarrhea. However the raised TLC and persistent diarrhea is a sign for concern. The most important factor to be aware of is to replace the fluid loss due to the diarrhea to prevent dehydration and avoid electrolyte disturbances. If your condition deteriorates , you may go to an E.R near you right away and discuss the options I outlined above.

Everytime I try to eat anything my stomach hurts and it flairs the diarreah so should I just not eat anything till it settles down, I have lost like 5 lbs in 4 days? OR should I try to eat and if so what? Should I take probiotics or is there anything I can do to help?

Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

The presentation is consistent with gastroenteritis. Try to consume softer diet that is easy on your stomach till the diarrhea is present. These include boiled brown rice, yogurt, custard, mashed soft vegetables, bananas etc. I wouldn't recommend probiotics straight away. Wait till the diarrhea subsides, after which you can initiate probiotics in consult with your doctor.
