Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea, Fever And Sore Throat

default
Posted on Sat, 6 Aug 2016
Question: My daughter is twenty seven months old.
On Wednesday July 13 she vomited three times before midnight. No vomiting since then.
On Thursday evening she developed diarrhea that has persisted through to today.
On Friday July 15 she had a low grade fever 99.9 in the early afternoon and was not interested in eating etc. Given Advil which reduced the fever which has not returned. Her appetite remains decreased but she is eating and keeping it down.
Today Saturday July 16 she has eaten some, but not a lot, is still drinking fluids, has no fever, is no longer vomiting, has had four diarrhea like bowel movements and at bedtime I noticed red blotchy areas under both arms in the arm pit area and on the outside and inside of her thighs which I took at first glance to be consistent with diaper rash or yeast. However it is in the armpit area which is abnormal.
Her activity level is fairly normal, is not lethargic, has not complained of a sore throat, headache etc.
What could be causing these symptoms in my little girl. Should I go to hospital?

Brief Answer:
This looks like viral diarrhoea- upload the images of the Rash

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... by what you quote I feel that your daughter is going through a viral diarrhoea. I will explain about it.

But regarding the rash which is not a usual feature of any diarrhoea I suggest that I will give you my opinion after seeing the rash. Skin conditions are best diagnosed and treated after directly seeing them. I suggest you upload the images of the rash in this website.

It seems your kid is having viral diarrhoea. Once it starts it will take 5-7 days to completely get better.

Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.

There is no need to use antibiotics unless there is blood in the motion. Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic associated diarrhoea.

I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days) & ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment. If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (as prescribed by your paediatrician).

Regarding diet - Avoid fruit juices as they might aggravate diarrhea. You can give zinc supplements & ORS apart from normal vegetarian porridges & soups.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. Wish your kid good health.
