Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea Along With Severe Dehydration

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Oct 2017
Question: Hi there,

I've been feeling unwell in the gut for the last 3 days. Yesterday, I experienced about 4 loose bowel movements when finally last night I twice had severe diarrhea. Nevertheless, I woke up with a bad headache that I am assuming is caused by dehydration (feels like a hangover headache). I've had quite a large amount of water and coconut water today, but it seems to just pass through me and the headache remains. The larger GI pains though seem to have subsided, but I again had 1 bowel movement of loose stool but no more severe diarrhea. Is there any treatment for the headache? Is there any specific fluid regimen I should be on if I happen to still be dehydrated? Should I try Pepto Bismol? Please let me know if there is anything I should look out for in the event I need medical attention for this. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
most persons resolve on their own

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

NO, you should not need medical attention unless the headache mains severe and does not respond to treatment.

It may be related to fluid loss or the illness itself.

The diarrhea appears to be resolving, when you pass 4 hours with no symptoms, you can start using a small amount of dry food such as biscuits, toast.

Adults do not get dehydrated as easily as children so your fluid status should not be too bad. You can continue to use an oral rehydration drink (rehydration salts or a dilute sports drink)

You can use paracetamol to help with the headache. It would be best not to use meds such as ibuprofen or naproxen because these can cause gastritis- irritation of the stomach.
Pepto bismol can be used if the diarrhea or abdominal pain restarts
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
