Suggest Treatment For Diabetes
Question: My wife having diabetic last 8 years, when she is pragnant of 2nd child doctor XXXXXXX given cetapin 1000mg. Now my child is one year baby, what can she do next?

More often, when you are a diabetic patient, you live on drugs for the rest of your life. I would suggest she continues with the drug and also go for regular check ups to see if she is responding positively to treatment and to screen for complications of diabetes.

Its ok but problem is same tablet continued or u will be suggest some other tablet. She is tested in self accuchek meter it will shows everytime pbs is 140mg and fpbs is 190 above. My doctor XXXXXXX says she stops feeding then he may be change the tablet. Thats why i clarify the same

1) Yes, your doctor says absolutely RIGHT thing. Medicine can ONLY be changed after stopping breast feeding to baby.
2) CETAPIN contains Metformin as active ingredient.
Previously, NO oral hypoglycemic drug was approved as SAFE during pregnancy and lactation period due to ADVERSE effects to fetus or baby.
Recently, METFORMIN (Only Drug) is approved as SAFE drug in pregnancy and women with Gestational Diabetes. Babies born to women treated with metformin have been found to develop less visceral fat and less prone to insulin resistance in later life. It is secreted in milk and can lead to hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis if the intake of drug and breast feeding occur simultaneously.
NO other drug is approved during this period. Kindly, consult with your treating doctor and make follow-up visit after stopping breast feeding.

I prefer combined drug (with Metformin) to control blood sugar (both fasting and postprandial). Sulfonylurea group of drug like Glimepiride etc is commonly used, depending on patient profile.
I suggest you to consult with your treating doctor or Diabetologist for complete assessment (including liver function, cardiac status and kidney function) before taking prescribed medication. Periodic eye examination is also mandatory. These are worthwhile to prevent future risk and complication.
