Question: Hi I have had an addiction to poker mmachine gambling for many years

I am now no longer motivated to go.
I struggle daily with the memories and all the losses financially. I have also stopped friendships. I feel I have lost a big part of me.

What can I do with my thoughts?
and I am not not sure how to start over. It all seems so hard and I just don't know what and how I am going to get the lifestyle I want.

I have a lot of health issues like pain and anxiety and I don't really work so I am left with a lot on my mind and body and I just feel lost alone and stuck.

Brief Answer:
You seem to be suffering from depression, you can be treated

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear,

Thanks for writing to us.

I read your query carefully and from narration I think you are suffering from depression. For confirmation of diagnosis detail history and mental status examination to be done by a psychiatrist.

Financial loss in poker, rumination of thoughts about the same, feeling of losing something from self, memory disturbance , no friendship, feeling alone and stuck at some point are symptoms suggestive of depression.

I can understand your helplessness that," What can I do with my thoughts?
and I just don't know what and how I am going to get the lifestyle I want."

But believe me you can get back to normal life. You have taken help of psychologists and gamblers but not from psychiatrist. As your problem is somewhat severe you need medicines.

First and foremost thing you should do is consultation of psychiatrist. After confirmation of diagnosis of depression medicines form SSRI group can be started. You will feel improvement in about 4 weeks and then under your doctor's supervision carry on treatment.
XXXXXXX issues like IBS, Hyperthyroid and lactose intolerance should also be checked with psychological problems like depression, anxiety and panic disorder.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.

Well - I just feel like Im going to go again to therapists and I recently tried but I felt like It was making me worse.

It has never worked over the years - even the medicines.

I appreciate your response. I guess there is no motivation to go as it feels like im going to feel worse by talking about everything. And I feel like because I don't have much money I don't want to spend any of it.

I just need a way to accept my current circumstances despite everything that has happened - and its a lot what has happened.

Isnt there anything that can help besides medicine with these thoughts. Maybe a book you suggest? or something to allow me to embrace the new life with no gambling.
I have signed up to online counselling tonight.
I just feel going to the Doctor or any other medical profession makes me feel like Im sick It just reminds me of the old days of constant visits.

a big part of me feels I have improved so much - yet now its how to motivate have faith and how TO LIVE -what do I want? When all these years I wanted my health to improve - and it has a lot - miraculously - by god -

Another thing - Is there actual medication to help with detached physical body feelings? the antidepressants years ago had no help. Cant believe 8 years of feeling like I was separate from my body. couldn't swallow foods - all those years......I tried so hard doctor after doctor......and now ....I guess I just want to celebrate how much my inner peace has come to light..but no friends....
I just cant be bothered leaving the house - don't have a car - and I have become a bit of a home person :) anything better than gambling.

Brief Answer:
A book is there, 'Feeling Good' by XXXXXXX Burns

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for follow up and for information.

I can understand that you are fed up with treatment. But again I want to clarify that medicines would help. If you can tell me detail about the past medicines I can give some comments. However financial problem is limiting that aspect in your case.

Yes apart form medicines one book is there which may help you a lot. I have suggested to many patients of mine and few of them had great help.
The book is 'FEELING GOOD' by XXXXXXX Burns.I think you can get it easily online and read it, it is therapy for depression.

Yes medicines help with detached physical body feelings.

At any junction when you ask for help your past will be asked as it is necessary for your treatment. I suggest to consult one doctor for long if feasible. This will help to avoid repetition of past again and again.

Let me know some info about your family, education and occupation if feasible.

Take care and all the best.
