Suggest Treatment For Cyst On Ovaries

Posted on Sat, 13 Dec 2014
Question: My wife has been gastric cancer free for about 9 months. They found a cyst on one of her ovaries. She said that they are going to remove ovary and check for cancer. She is supposed to be down for 4-6 weeks. I have not been able to make any of her Dr. visits and I just don't feel like this sounds right. Is the down time for removal of 1 ovary 4-6 weeks. What is the likelyhood that the cyst is a return of her gastric cancer.

Brief Answer:
POSSIBLE, BUT NEED THE REPORTS DONE

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Can you explain what you mean by ' down time '.
Secondly, please upload the details of the cyst.
The imaging and any reports done pertaining to it.
Without looking at the type of cyst, it is difficult to say if it is malignant.
Gastric tumours do drop down to the ovaries, so it is possible that the cyst is a drop down from the gastric cancer.
However I need to look at the investigations done so far.
Please revert with those.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Take care.

I wish I had the images. She is not being forth coming with information. When I say down time, I mean the amount of time it will take to heal. She told me 4-6 weeks. I did not think it was that long for removal of just one ovary. All I really know is that about 6 week ago, OBGYN found last cyst. A month ago she went for PET Scan. Last week she was crying and said that she had to have surgery to see if cancer is back. This week she said they are removing one ovary and checking it for cancer.

Does it sound right that they are only going to remove one ovary? She has her tubes tied and we don't plan on having any more children. With stomach cancer in remission, the possibility of metastases to the ovaries, why are they not removing both? Why are they not doing a full hysterectomy? I know with the lack of information that I have, my questions are probably hard to answer. I am just wondering of there is cause for cancer concern?

Brief Answer:
DONE MY BEST

Detailed Answer:
I am glad you understand that there is practically no information to work upon.
It is all in the realm of speculation.
If one ovary is showing a cyst, they would remove that to see if the cyst is cancerous.
They would not straightaway remove both without confirming malignant spread.
Hysterectomy and full removal would follow if the tumour is confirmed.
PLus, with stomach cancer in remission, it is rare, but not unheard of, to have ovarian metastasis ( Krukenberg tumour is what it is called, you can look it up ).
I have done my best to theorize, please give me specific facts so that I can be more definitive and useful.
Take care.
