Suggest Treatment For Cough, Sneezing And Swelling In Eyelids And Palate

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Apr 2015
Question: Thank you,
Last night out of nowhere I my eyelids, upper and lower, and the roof of my mouth started to swell. Before I noticed the swelling, I started to cough, then sneezed several times and felt that my eyes were itchy like when I have seasonal allergies. But wow, my eyelids swell and my sinuses or the area on either side of my nose swelled and I could not breath through my nose. The uvula in the back of my throat swelled and I could not lie flat for long when it seemed to block breathing pathway. I could breath if I sat up, which I did all night. This morning I have swelling in the face but it has gone down. Eyes are red, throat is sore. I don't have known food allergies. My son has a tree nut allergy, but I have never experienced it. What I had to eat right before this started was "Fair Trade dark chocolate bark with pretzels". I am also taking a selenium supplement for hypothyroid issues, but it is low dose along with iodine in a kelp tablet. Started this a month ago. Any ideas? I will call my doctor tomorrow, but I didn't go to emergency last night as I didn't feel I was in danger of not being able to breath (if I remained upright).

Brief Answer:
Allergic reaction

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mrs.XXXX,
Thank you for posting your question to HCM,

I'm sorry to read what you have been gone through. What you are describing looks like a typical allergy reaction. I'm also happy to read that it is not getting worse, as sometimes this reactions can be life threatening and need urgent intervention.

My main recommendation would be to avoid the food you ate before it started. Look in the compositions list if there is anything new for you, that you haven't ate before. I don't think this is caused from the selenium supplement since you have been taking it for a month, but you never know from allregies- there are also known late reactions that start after some time after being in contact with the allergen.

If you can, I would recommend to use a antihistamine drug like cetirizine, loratadine, ect...whatever you find from this class of medicines over the counter in the pharmacies.
Also, something you may need is a steroid orally, to prevent it become worse if you have contact again with the unknown allergen that causes the reaction. But my guesses are that it can be given only with prescription by a local doctor. Using prednisone or prednisolone 1mg/kg wieght, maximum 60 mg daily would help a lot with breathing.

Yes, call your doctor as well, even if you become better. You need to find out what it was that caused the reaction, so you be careful to avoid it in the future, because the allergic reaction tent to become worse when people have contact with them the second, third and more times.

Hope this is helpful.
Let me know if you need any more clarification. I would be happy to answer.

Take care,
Dr. Papaqako.

I did read about the anaphylaxis reaction on line, but don't have a clue what caused it in my case. I will get to the doctor tomorrow for sure.
