Suggest Treatment For Constipation

Question: I am taking care of my almost 12 year old granddaughter while her parents are out of the country. She is having her first and awful bout of constipation. It has been 6 days since she has had a bowel movement and is extremely uncomfortable. She has been drinking lots of water and has decreased her dairy intake yesterday and today. Last night we gave her 1 Ducolax tablet with no effect. This afternoon she ate 6 prunes in hopes of relief. Would it be helpful to give her Miralax? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. There have been no changes in her diet. She has been very physically active in the past; but has had much less physically active in the past 2 months, which I think may be a contributing factor. Thank you for any advice.

Brief Answer:
Giving Miralax can be helpful.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic. I have gone very carefully through your query. Incidentally, constipation in children has become a very frequently encountered problem these days. The primary reason for the same is lack of adequate play and/or the lack of adequate amounts of fiber containing foods in diet. Giving Miralax can be helpful.

It is good to know that you make sure that he drinks plenty of water. But you also need to ensure that he goes to pass stool at a regular time every day (irrespective of whether he feels an urge to pass). This will demote stool holding habits and would promote regular bowel habits.

Let me know if I could help further.
