Question: Hi Doctor,
My son is 30 months old and is suffering from severe constipation for quiet long now. Initially his doctor said that as he grows up and improves his diet it will get fine but till date its the same. He does not pass motion for 3 to 4 days and then finally he gets cranky and keep saying potty potty, but he does not passes his motion. We have stopped his milk to quiet a extend. He is very found of cold chocolate milk so we add castor oil and give him which he drinks (castor oil we have just started recently) but still its the same. We avoid giving him milk daily.... its just like 4 to 5 small glasses in whole 1 week he consumes.

If he does not do motion till the 4th day then we give him anima. After anima he feel well and is playful. All goes well for next few days. Sometime he does pass motion every alternate day but then again after some days it comes to square one. Same old story.... 3 to 4 days no motion and gets cranky and says potty potty.

This is actually going on for a long time (almost a year). We even tried his potty training but he gets so scared that he stops doing potty. So we thought let his motion come to normal then we will traine him.

He eats wheat roti, veggie, dal n rice but no fruits and no home juices.
The medication which we giving him for his constipation are Cremaffin 10 ml and duphalac 10 ml
With Cremaffin when he passes motion its watery. With these medication he use to do motion every alternate day but for last 10 days he has started to struggle again.

In last 8 days we have given him anima twice as he had not passed motion for 4 days.

Doctor please give us a solution where my son comes out of this constipation problem.

We some how feels he is scared to do potty and for him its like no no no for potty. Even when its 3 to 4 days without passing motion and he gets cranky, we tell him to do potty but he does not do.
When we use anima and he passes out. Initially his potty is hard but after that its all loose.

Even today when we gave him anima, he passed his motion. Then again after 5 minutes he started saying potty potty and he passed thin motion. Again after half an hour he said potty potty and passed very little watery motion.
We really feel bad when we give him anima. He cries a lot but we don't have any option as he has not pass motion for 4 days and is cranky.
would also like to inform you that his doctor told us to give Cremaffin 10 ml continuously for 15 days and duphalac 10 ml for long time.

In my previous email i stated we gave him anima twice in last 8 days its basically we gave him anima twice in last 15 to 18 days.

Please suggest us something helpful doctor.

Regards

Brief Answer:
Need to add fibres to diet.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.
I can understand your concern.

Constipation is usually a temporary problem in children and no cause for concern.
A child with constipation should be instructed to drink an adequate amount of water each day, eat a diet high in soluble and insoluble fibers.
Soluble fibers include pectin, flax, and gums; insoluble fibers include psyllium and brans from grains like wheat and oats.
Fresh fruits and vegetables contain both soluble and insoluble fibers.
Some other stuff such as peas, beans, apricots, prunes, peaches, pears, plums, and spinach twice a day will also help.
Dietary fiber intake should be increased gradually, along with an increase in water consumption, in order to produce soft, bulky stools.
Adding condiments like jeera, haldi and ajwain in your food while cooking it is a great way to help digestion.

Fruits must be given after diet.

Also you can try acupuncture which said to relax the abdomen, ease discomfort, and stimulate regular bowel movements.

Some home remedies are-
Six drops of XXXXXXX ( Rosmarinus officinalis ) and six drops of thyme ( Thymus spp.) diluted by one ounce of almond oil, olive oil, or another carrier oil can relieve constipation when used to massage the abdomen.

Homeopathy also can offer assistance with constipation.

Avoid foods that contain white flour like maida, white sugar and other processed Include fruits and vegetables into your daily diet.
Constipation can be side effects of certain medications.
Kindly tell whether he is on some medication or not.?
Not drinking enough fluids, anxiety or depression also causes constipation.

Hope i helped you.
