Posted on Mon, 16 Feb 2015
Question: Hello,
And thank you in advance for your answer. My partner is having heavily congested nose, head pressure. Probably its a sinus infection, at least it looks like it. The other problem is that he used neti pot with tap water, and used it improperly. It was coming out from his mouth and even eye on ice occasion. He used it for 2 days. We are very concerned about the possibility of infection. What are symptoms for the infection if he get some bacteria from neti pot? and how soon it can surface? And generally, whats the best way to decongest and treat the sinus infection?

Brief Answer:
This could be sinus infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to healthcare magic.
I had gone through your question. Your partner has got sinus infection. Yes, using unsterile water for neti pot could transmit bacteria to sinuses and makes the symptoms more intense. The symptoms of bacterial infection of sinuses will be.. Nasal congestion, headache, nasal discharge that will be purulent, sometimes fever. The presentation of symptoms depend on individuals immunity. Once the bacteria enters the sinuses it can surface the mucosa and show symptoms as early as 24 to 48 hours.Nothing to worry. Your partner will be fine.
I recommend the following.
1) A course of antibiotics preferably fluroquinalone group. These are prescribed medications.
2) A tablet levocetrizine with phenylephrine, the best combination for decongestion.
3) Steam inhalation helps in sinus ventilation and helps to clear sinus collection.
4) For headache tablet paracetamol can be given whenever required.

Your partner will be fine . Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions, I am happy to help you. I wish you both a good health.
