Suggest Treatment For Cold, Nasal Congestion And Cough

default
Posted on Fri, 2 Jan 2015
Question: Hi Doctor,
My 6 months old baby is suffering from cold and congestion of nose. As a result she is not able to take regular feeding (currently she is mainly on breast feeding). She is also not able to sleep properly and crying while lying down.
The doctor advised us to use the Mucus suction available in the market. My question is how many times can we use it? When we use it, her nose is clear for sometime, but again it is blocked in 15 minutes. Is it safe to use it frequently? Also, can it be painful for the baby?
If she breaths through her mouth for long, she is coughing. Can we give Nasoclear saline drop? What are its bad effects if any considering her age. Can it cause any congestion in head or chest?
Is there any natural way to take the mucus out?
Please let me know.

Brief Answer:
here is the answer

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.
I can understand your concern.
You can use mucus suction as and when required, there are no problems with its use. It will not cause pain.
Saline nasal drops like nasoclear are very safe with no side effects as it contains normal saline water.
It will not cause congestion in chest or head.
You can use nasoclear as much times as you want (1 to 2 drops in each nostrils).
Natural method to relieve cough or mucus in 6 month old should be avoided like mixture of honey, tulsi leaves, turmeric poweder, hirda.
Better way use moist steam inhalation by keeping a vaporiser nearby in babies room.
You can add nilgiri oil or vapocaps to warm water to relive congestion.
Ascoril-ls drops or mucolite drops can be given to relive congestion.
These drops and steam inhalation together can dilute mucus, making it easier to expel out.
Also you can try nebulisation with normal saline if you have nebuliser at home.
Hope i helped you.

Thank you for your quick reply.

I have just started her with semi solids but she is not readily accepting any yet. So, I give her Carrot juice, Dal water everyday along with some banana puree or sweet potato boiled. But with this cold, she is not accepting anything.

Can you please suggest if I can add some salt or sugar to her foods to add taste? What should I be feeding her right now?

Brief Answer:
Yes, you can add salt for the taste

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query.

Right now is good time to start her on rice and dal water, vegetable soups, iron-fortified baby rice cereal, pureed fruits like apple , banana, carrots, potatoes. I suggest you to give them in small quantities initially gradually increasing the quantity.

You can also include fluids like the boiled water, coconut water, fruit juice, vegetable juice in moderate quantities.

Yes, you can add salt for the taste.

If she is not accepting anything due to cold and cough then breast milk will be sufficient for her till recovers from illness.

Wish your child a speedy recovery.

Hope, I helped you.

Thank you for your response. My daughter seems to react to Nasoclear. Whenever we give her the drop, she starts crying. Can she have any any burning sensation from the drop?
And even if we give her the drop, we are unable to properly extract the mucus. Thus, she is having a stuffy nose and is unable to feed or breath properly.

Is there any other way to ease her discomfort?

Brief Answer:
Nebulization

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up.
Nasoclear should not irritate nasal mucosa; it is very safe as good as boiled or sterile water.
But if the baby is not tolerating that, then nebulization is the only way.
You can nebulize the baby either with asthalin plus normal saline or only with normal saline.
Hope I helped you.
