Posted on Mon, 1 Aug 2016
Question: I have been suffering from cold, cough since childhood .I underwent the surgery 1.5 years back where doctor treated the sinus problem.Even after the treatment i catch up with cold and cough very easily either when weather changes or due to some other reason.

My biggest problem is that after consuming the food (any food) i do feel brain fog, produces more cough, hearing capability reduce, unconscious, understanding become weak, difficultly in speaking.

Further i noticed that when i eat sambar (south XXXXXXX dish) mainly andra style , i start showing the allergy symptoms such as swollen eye with uncontrollable itching, Nettle-rash, coughing. This happen to me each time when i consume sambar of andra style (note: XXXXXXX sambar has no effect on me). Here when i take AVIL medicine all the symptoms disappeared.

In past when i was around 17 years old, first time i noticed that after consuming the food, immediately my both eye swollen so much that i could not even see , Nettle-rash all over the body, i fainted, blood pressure reduced to 60, hemoglobin reduced to 5-6.I was admitted in hospital. Doctor prescribed AVIL which made me recovered soon.Thereafter when ever i get these symptom i take AVIL and symptoms disappeared.

1. Could you please tell me what food causes the allergy ?
2. Is it indeed an allergy ?
3. How allergy could be tested ?
4. Is allergy treatable ?
5. What could may be the reason that i fainted first time when caught up with allergy ?

Brief Answer:
The food allergy requires further testing to identify the food allergens.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Sinus surgery does not cure allergy. You can control these allergies with medication.

2. You are allergic to food stuff.

3. There are Skin Prick Tests (such as AllergoSPT), IgE based tests (such as Immunocap, AllergoDip) and IgG based tests (such as FoodPrint ).

4. There is no cure for allergy. Avoid foods that do not suit you. Desensitisation is not successful in food allergy and food intolerance.

5. The severe reactions you gave experienced earlier are anaphylaxis and angioneurotic edema. Theses are severe hypersensitivity reactions. Hence it is advisable to identify the food allergens and avoid them.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Thanks for the answers.

I have few more questions please answer them as well :

1. Since after eating food (every time) i could feel the itching at the back of my shoulder and produces cough, brain fog, unconscious etc.
Most of the time my meal consist of wheat. Are there chances that i could be allergic to wheat given that i am XXXXXXX and this allergy is hardly being expected in XXXXXXX

2. Where all the above mentioned allergic tests could be done i.e are these performed in some of the specialized labs (limited to some cities) or in any diagnostic center all over the country.

3. Any idea what is the content which causes allergy when i consume sambar ?
Is it mustard ? In this case symptoms are exactly the same what i experienced first time the allergy and got admitted to hospital.

These tests will identify the allergens.

1. It will be better to get these tests done instead of speculating on allergens such as wheat or mustard.

2. These tests ate done in specialised labs but should be available in your city.

3. These tests will accurately identify the substances causing your allergy.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. All these allergy tests should cost about 25k to 30k as a package.

2. ImmunoCAP is a more expensive test (around 700 per separate allergen [not a mix of allergens]).

3. Kindly upload these test results either here or directly at bit.ly/Dr-Sumit-Bhatti
