Posted on Wed, 29 Apr 2015
Question: My son is 1year 15 days old. He has been suffering from cold and cough. The doctor advised for montoux test, CBC, SGPT, PA view chest X-ray. Montoux test is 18mm x 20mm. All other test are normal. The doctor has said the child is having TB and prescribed medicines: neopeptine drop, aptivate syrup, junior lanzol 15 tablets (half at night). Is it the diagnosis and followup treatment treatment?
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
diagnosis is correct medicines not complete

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
It is correct to suspect Tuberculosis in persistent cold and cough
The diagnosis too is correct as mantoux test is definitely positive in your child.
But the medicines your.doctor has prescribed ( from what you mentioned) do not include any medication for tuberculosis.
Do confirm aagainif he has given some other medicines apart from the three you mentioned.
If nothing else has been given enquire about starting anti tuberculosis treatment.
This needs to be done as soon as possible.
Usually 4 drugs ( not the ones you mentioned) are given for 2 months and then 2 drugs for 4 months.
Wishing your child good health and speedy recovery.
Regards
Dr Arun

Thanks for the reply.
Only the medicines I mentioned have been prescribed.
The doctor I consulted is a pediatrician.
Should I consult a chest specialist for the treatment?

Brief Answer:
consult another pediatrician

Detailed Answer:
It is better to consult another pediatrician.
Pediatricians would be more helpful than adult chest specialist.
