Question: My mom in law is 90. She get a GI blockage often. We give her milk of magnesia in a small dose, then she runs for days. Then we try to stop the runs. Blockage, runs, blockage, runs. We puray all her food. We have gone gluten free. We have taken oatmeal out of the diet. We have gone to buckwheat. We are now on a probiotic. We just want a normal stool. Can you advise?

Brief Answer:
This is constipation!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Your mom has chronic constipation. I will appreciate that you provide to me a list of her medications for review. This is very important as medications cause constipation.

Best approach to constipation i to increase fruits, fluids and fibers in her diet. Avoid over processed food that produces minimal residue. If these measures fail to help, then it becomes necessary to get her on a regular laxative such as milk of magnesia or bisacodyl.

Besides, has she been seen by a GI doctor? Did they make any other specific diagnosis and recommendation? Is your mom in law physically active or more sedentary?

I hope to hear from you. For now, the above measures should be implemented.
