Suggest Treatment For Chronic Constipation

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Apr 2015
Question: I have constipation problems that I fix with pills from the drugstore shelves but I know it
isn't good for me. This has been going on for over a year. Can you suggest anything other
than prune juice, added drugstore fiber. I eat lots of apples and oranges. Thanks for your
help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Ms

Consuming plenty of fibre is just one step in ensuring soft stools. As you have mentioned you been consuming lots of oranges and apples , the fibre intake is good.

I would suggest you the following

1. Ensure good intake of water : 2 to 3 litre of water everyday. Not just fibre intake , even water intake is equally important in avoiding constipation

2. Regularise your bowel habits : Spend sufficient time in restroom And also fix up the time . This will regularise the bowel motility and also help in evacuation of colonic contents

3. Physical activity : Daily exercise like brisk walking for 30 minutes everyday promotes intestinal motility and helps in evacuation of stools.
Individual leading sedentary lifestyle with less or no exercise are very much prone to issue of constipation

4. Hot seitz bath : To a tub of lukewarm water add a handful of common table salt. Sit in it for 15 to 2 0 minutes each session before retiring to restroom .

This will relax the perineum muscle and help in easy passage of stools

5. Thorough clinical examination from your Physician to rule out any local anal pathology causing constipation

6. Short term use of laxative like Lactulose will be helpful

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Wishing you and your family a very happy and healthy life.

Thanks for the info doctor. I went to see my doctor this a.m. and he suggested\, as you did that I drink more water and to stay away from fatty foods and eat mostly vegetables and fruit. He also told me to go ahead and start taking the
samples of "Linzes" that the gastroenterologist gave to me when I last saw him. I couldn't go back to him because I changed Insurance companies. I plan to do just that when I get back from a weekend trip to Palo Alto.

I will get back to you and let you know my progress. Thanks a bunch!
