Suggest Treatment For Chronic Constipation

Posted on Sat, 21 Jun 2014
Question: Would like to experience normal bowel habits. I have a chronic constipation issue. Had colonoscopy about 14 months ago and was told the large intestine was longer than most or normal. Have no cancer there. The MD did not prescribe any corrections or measures for this issue. I experience much flatulence / and watery elimination that has no formed stool ... but a "white scum" in the toilet bowl. I drink 80 to 100 ozs of water daily. Take 12.5mg Sennosides (Ex Lax) at HS. I have been taking 2 or 3 Bisacodyl 5mg tablets once a week to have an evacuation of the bowel.

I am active and try to get normal exercise daily. Play racket ball twice a week for 2 hours... Mow yard once a week and do outside activity in between. Will try more fiber in diet but feel that will not suffice. My best result is to be taking the DULCOLAX tablets (2 or 3) about every 6 or 7 days to be cleaned out!! How does the MIRALAX (Polyethylene Glycol) work? It is described as Osmotic Laxative ... and a stool softener. I don't have any natural stools !!

Brief Answer:
Life style modification

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

Polyethylene glycol is osmotic laxative which acts by drawing water into intestine to increase bulk, but it should be used ossactionally not on regular basis.

In your condition bowel movements are reduced, so stimulant laxative like dulcolax is a better laxative. Life style modification do help a lot gradually to reduce your problem. Regular brisk walk which increases bowel movements and solves constipation.

Hope I answered your query. Feel free to ask further related query.
