Suggest Treatment For Chesty Cough

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Jan 2015
Question: I have been suffering with a chesty cough for over 9 days now and find myself unable to sleep for ant length of time. I have been taking Robitusssin to loosen the flegm , but seem to have reached an impasse. I am Diabetic u also had a tripe heart bypass 18 years ago. I'd just like to go to bed and sleep without constantly being bothered by a ticklish throat. The condition has already spilt my Christmas, plus my taste buds seem to have taken a hike, as everything I try to eat, tastes horrible.

Brief Answer:
may need antibiotic treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to HCM forum.
Thanks for posting to us.
Sorry to hear that you had an ill festive time.

Cough persisting for more than 9 days may indicate an ongoing respiratory tract infection, which may need antibiotics.
It will be fine if you can clear a few more points in this regard.
Are you feeling febrile?
Is the cough dry, or you are able to expectorate sputum;if,what is the color and nature ?
Any other symptoms like sore throat/nasal congestion?
Do you have history of previous illnesses like asthma or COPD?

After confirmation, we can treat the infection with antibiotics and antihistamines for a few days.
Meanwhile, you can use antihistamine like levocetirezine 5mg once daily to relieve cough.
Also, avoid exposure to cold and dust.

Hope this answer will help.
Kindly follow up.
Wishing for a faster cure.
Thank you.

Am not feeling febrile (had to use dictionary to see what that meant!) My cough is sometimes dry but am taking on fluids as much as possible . The sputum seems to be consistently yellow in colour. Sore throat at times, nasal congestion mostly all of the time. have no idea what COPD is, I'd already come to the conclusion myself that I would probably need anti-biotics, but with the timing of my question, am not even sure when mu surgery The Bentley Medical Practice id open for business again. Possibly Monday 29th. December, meanwhile I continue to suffer these sleepless nights and at times feel like a zombie. I have been prescribed anti-histamines before, but all they did was stop my nose running at night, but left me with a dry throat in the morning, the last one's I had were Cetrizine Hydrochloride. These were prescribed because I suffer with Rhinitus I think it's called, so have had that problem for sometime. I have had anti-biotics for chest infection before but it was some years back.

correction, the discharge from my nose is yellow, my sputum is white

keep on hearing a sound on my computer from your website I presume, but have no idea what it is, possibly my answer, but how do I access it. You did say something about a a portal and my inbox, but I have no idea where they are. I've checked my e-mail on my outlook.com but nothing more is there to see.

Brief Answer:
Need antibiotics.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
Thanks for the information given.

Persistent nasal congestion with yellowish nasal discharge indicates mostly bacterial sinusitis. If not treated early, this can cause secondary infection of the lower respiratory tract too resulting in cough.

For such cases I usually give antibiotics like azithromycin or levofloxacin along with antihistamine for about 5 days. So kindly see your doctor at the earliest for treatment.

Meanwhile, you can take levocetirezine or cetirezine hydrochloride for reducing secretions.
Also, do steam inhalation 6 to 8 times daily. This will help loosening and easy expulsion of mucus.

COPD means chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (causing persisting cough and sputum of years duration), a complication of long-term smoking.
Your symptoms are not consistent with the disease, and need not be worried.

Hope I have answered your query.
If you have no further questions, you can close the discussion and rate the answer.
Wishing you good health
Thank you.
