Question: Hello Doctor,
I am XXXXXXX I am seeking your help for my sister. On October 17th she had breathing problem and we admitted her in KIMS. During the treatment, she had a mild cardiac arrest and her supply of o2 to the brain stopped . Later she was diagnosed with Renal disease and she is undergoing Dialysis on every alternate days. They took MRI of the brain and they told that she had Hypoxic Ischemic Injury-Adult pattern. She is in a vegetative state right now. We are very much worried about her condition. She is having a 5 year old baby girl. Is this curable? We are ready to shift her to Apollo if needed.

Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
MRI brain reveals severe brain damage.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mr XXXXXXX

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted the details of your sister. It is unfortunate that she suffered hypoxic ischemic injury (brain damage due to lack of oxygen and blood supply) of brain.

MRI brain shows features of severe brain damage.

Additional tests such as EEG and evoked potential studies can show further extent of brain damage and help us in predicting the chances of good or bad outcome.

We can not call it a vegetative state yet, as we need to wait for four-six weeks for that.

As of now, the treatment is supportive (with oxygen, BP control, good nutrition, dialysis, etc) and there is no specific treatment for brain damage. So, I suggest you to continue with KIMS hospital at present.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.
