Question: For 8 days now ive been experiencing a burning, nausea, bloated feeling along with hot and cold sweats and dizziness. Went to er 2 days ago and blood work and ct scan came back negative. I saw my pcp yesterday and he thinks its gastritis and prescribed me nexium. This morning I woke up to bad nausea and burning sensation in my stomach along with a lot of dry heaving and just feel very very uncomfortable. MY blood pressure was fine and I don't have a fever. Brief Answer:
continue nexium, probiotics, small fluids

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It does sound like gastritis as suggested by your doctor. This is infection/inflammation of the stomach.

It can cause some or all of the following: loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, bloating

If the inflammation/infection also involves the other aspect of the gastrointestinal tract then diarrhea can occur.

In addition to continuing the use of the nexium you can try the following:
(1) use only very small amounts of fluid. If you use a lot of fluid at one time then you may feel nauseated.

Use 1 tsp to 1 tbs every 5 minutes for the first hour. IF this is tolerated then the amount can be increased.

Use either oral rehydration solutions from your local pharmacy or gatorade. These would not just give you back fluids but also electrolytes that you are losing

(2)probiotics- these have been found to be very helpful in treating gastritis or gastroenteritis.
They shorten the course of the illness

You can either use them on their own or use yogurts (in small quantities at a time) with probiotic.

(3)there are medications available that may help your nausea eg pepto bismol or dramamine

(3)avoid any solid food for at least 4 to 6 hours, maybe longer if symptoms persist
Use only if there is a 4 to 6 hour period with no vomiting

Start with small amounts of dry solid food

Summary: (1)Continue nexium
(2)small amounts of fluid only
(3)probiotics
(4)anti emetics (for vomiting)
(5)hold off solid

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Is there any chance this could be a stomach virus/flu. I've had all the same feelings for the past 8 days except for the dry heaving that started today. I also forgot to mention that this seems to come and go and not a persistant occurance

Brief Answer:
it does sound like this

Detailed Answer:
HI

Gastritis can occur due to acid reflux (resulting in irritation of the stomach) or due to infection/inflammation of the stomach.

Stomach virus or flu is the same as gastritis referring to above (infection/inflammation of the stomach) or gastroenteritis (if diarrhea involved).

The most common infective agent causing gastritis or gastroenteritis is viral though bacterial infections can also occur.

Hope this clears this up, please feel free to ask anything else

so how long should I continue this treatment before thinking something else may be wrong? its already been 8 days although ive only taken the nexium twice, but my worst symptoms occurred in the past 3-5 hours with the bad dry heaving. Im sorry for all the questions, I deal with a lot of anxiety and panic attacks and i'm looking for peace of mind.

Brief Answer:
24 to 36 hours initially

Detailed Answer:
HI

You can try this for 24 to 36 hours. Some initial improvement should be seen even if the symptoms do not completely abate.

You can feel free to ask anything else if needed
