default
Posted on Fri, 16 Jan 2015
Question: I made an appointment with a neurologist to
get the recommended tests regarding my leg pain. He
can not see me until January.
Right now I have intense burning in back
of knee and calf. It feels like someone left heating
pad on too long. Does anything help that? I have
used cold packs and just somewhat helpful.
Also. Since burning is much more intense
now not sure I can wait till XXXXXXX to see him.

Brief Answer:
It can be radiculopathy or neuropathy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist and I'd surely like to answer your query.
Intense burning pain on back side of knee and calf, can be a manifestation of neuropathy or radiculopathy.
Anti-neuralgics like amitriptyline, pregabalin or duloxetine along with methylcobalamin will help improve this(please take this under treatment supervised by a physician). In case of severe pain, opioid medicines like tramadol can be taken.
Please tell a few leading questions-
1)whether these symptoms are in both legs or one side?
2)Any weakness in limbs?
3)Any sensations loss in limbs?
4)Any difficulty with micturition?
5)Since how much time are you having this pain and it started suddenly or insidious onset?
6)Any history of back pain?
Please follow up with these details and I'll shall be glad to further help you with your query. You may need nerve conduction studies to diagnose your problem.I shall be able to tell it after I get to know the above details.

Hello, It started in mid September with odd sensation/ charley horse and then
turned into knee pain.
Left leg only.

I can not lift my left more then 2 inches from floor
when standing. I can not move it to the side or back more then one inch.
I have no problems urinating.
I am very tired by could be from lack of sleep.
No loss of limb,
No history of back pain. I have weakness in leg
and balance is somewhat off. I have an odd nerve feeling in calf
happens during the day, but not too intense.
Have problems getting dressed each day.
Was treated for sciatica / sports chiropractor and he said it is not improving
and for me to see another Dr. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Nerve conduction studies and MRI lumbosacral spine.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for being in follow-up.

Your clinical presentation may be a case of sciatic neuropathy or lumbosacral radiculopathy.
Nerve conduction studies of lower limbs including lumbosacral plexus study and Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) of lumbosacral spine with contrast needs to be done to establish the diagnosis.
Meanwhile,as I mentioned drugs like amitriptyline, duloxetine or pregabalin along with methylcobalamin may improve the symptoms. If pain is severe, tramadol can be taken(all the medicines to be taken under physician's supervision only).Alongside, physiotherapy needs to be continued.

Do visit your neurologist so that he may examine you well and help in establishing the diagnosis and further management.Hope,I have answered your query,if you have still further queries,I shall be glad to answer them else, please close the thread and rate it.
