Suggest Treatment For Bumps On The Toe

default
Posted on Wed, 26 Apr 2017
Question: Hi. I recently got this bump on the joint of my big toe. which I believe is a bunion. it developed in a course of 3 months only. So it's fairly new and mild now. I always used to wear open shoes but I switched to closed shoes these 3 months and then this bone developed. my question is can I reverse it without surgical interference? it is not very painful. But I do get pain if I wear heels but I don't wear heels all the time just a couple times a month. So pls help me find a solution in reversing it.

Brief Answer:
Yes it is a bunion

Detailed Answer:
Hi, I am Dr Gopal Goel Orthopedic Surgeon.
You are right, this is a bunion. Bunions develop over a long period and are precursor to great toe deformity ( called hallux valgus). The three months period may be a coincidence and also that in closed footwear it progresses more rapidly. There are practically no instances that I saw where the bunions reversed, some say it on biomechanics. While Orthopedic surgeons deal with surgeries involving bunions, Podiatrist in west deal with non surgical ways of bunions.
As far as prevention is concerned, only use of shoes with wide toe box and a spacer like the one you are wearing in the picture attached may help. Apart from being a dynamic deformity (one which increases due to muscle action) it is will very slowly increase / gradually over a period of 15-20 years with precautions. Heels can be used only with open footwear.
Surgery will be required if it becomes painful and/or stiff toe. If the deformity becomes more prominent on to the other toes.
I hope that I have answered your question. please feel free to ask any further question.
