Question: I have bronchitis. I was on doxycycline that cleared up the dark yellow mucus. I still have a bad mucus taste and smell on my breath. I just started taking prednisone. will the bad taste and smell go away soon?

Brief Answer:
It will soon pass

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking in HCM

I can understand your concern.

It happens that sometimes during or after the treatment with doxycycline it remains a bad smell or taste in the mouth .

But do not worry it will soon pass.

Given that you are currently under treatment with prednisone i would add in your treatment, if you were my patient, Omeprazol once orally for up to a month, for protecting the stomach from the steroids (prednisone) but please it would be better to discuss with your doctor about your problem and i am sure he will prescribe it for you.

Another cause for the bed smell might be the stomach too and for this the above treatment will help for both.

I wish you a fast recovery and feel free to ask me again

Dr Jolando,

You might be right about the Doxycyline, I notice the bad taste and smell from my lungs and sinuses 2 day after taking Doxycyline. I take probiotics every time I take antibiotics. I wasn't sure if it was the Doxycyline, Probiotic's or Bronchitis.

I guess I'm so curious because I've never had a cold this bad before.

My PCP wanted to put me on Levofloxacin until, I read the FDA black box warnings. What do you think of FLOUOROQUINLONES and there harmful side effects that sometimes are crippling and don't go away?

Dr Jolando,

Where did you find that DOXYCYLINE causing bad breath I think it might be because it started 2 days after taking it but, I'm finding very little on it on google.

Brief Answer:
Fluoroquinolones are not indicated

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

DOXYCYCLINE is among the first choices for acute bronchitis approved by FDA.

FLUOROQUINOLONES are not considered the first line therapy for bronchitis, according to medical guidelines. For using them there are some specific indications considering too their side effects and depending on the case.

However it is your doctor who decide for this because he evaluate better your clinical picture.

In my opinion you should not take FLUOROQUINOLONES for acute bronchitis

Take care
