default
Posted on Tue, 30 Dec 2014
Question: In November I was told I had to take breathing treatments while I was at the hospital as the alveoli at the bottom of my lungs had collapsed and I was at risk for developing pneumonia....that was several weeks ago but I have not had any follow up treatment. The last two days I feel like I have developed bronchitis and am having a hard time with a drycough etc. what can you tell me about that and what should I tell my internist about it tomorrow?

Brief Answer:
Get workup done.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney.
I understand your concern.
See, at this age with Hypertension, Dyslipidemia and history of collapsed alveoli you are prone to catch pneumonia. In winters the probability of getting Bronchitis followed by Infection (Pneumonia) is very high.
I would advise you to get a repeat Chest Xray and CT Chest.
Also, you might require antibiotics for Bronchitis. It Is not essential that a person gets fever in Pneumonia at this age. Many a times at this age , you will have Infection without a fever.
You need to get examined by your doctor for any sign of labored breathing and chest congestion.
Also, ask him to evaluate you from cardiac point of view. As with Hypertension and cholesterol issues you can have these cough and breathing problems due to cardiac issues.
Many a times we keep attributing these symptoms to Bronchitis but these are due to Cardiac issues.
Also, I would advise you to discuss with him for getting you vaccinate for h.influenza and s.pneumoniae.
Vaccination if done will reduce the chances of getting infection by these most common bacteria's.
I hope my answer helps you.
Wish you a speedy recovery.
If you have any further query please ask me.
Stay Healthy.
