Suggest Treatment For Blood In Stool When Suffering From Diverticulitis

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Oct 2014
Question: I was diagnosed with Diverticulitis in late 2012, but had not had an episode since after changing my diet, and removing any possible foods that may cause it to react, such as hard seeds, nuts, etc. But, now I have passed an amount of blood mixed in with a somewhat mucous stool and outside the stool itself. There has been no pain involved, but since going back to working behind a desk I have gained around 90-100 lbs. What could this be symptoms of?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Blood mixed with the stool and mucus can be caused by bacterial infection, large intestine polyp or even colon cancer.
Diverticles presence in such young age clearly indicates that you have had constipation and/or hard stool for a long time. If you are also overweight, this makes the risk of colon cancer much higher than regular.
The stool you have had recently is rather not a symptom of diverticulitis as the main symptom of it is lower left abdominal pain.
I suggest you to consult your doctor and get scheduled for colonoscopy.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Dr. Stanko,

I have not been constipated that much in my life or had regular hard stools, but I did have a love of extremely hot and spicy foods. The hotter the better before 2012, but have reduced to eating foods with no hot sauce and low or mild salsas at the most. Could the acids from the extremely hot and spicy food have possibly created the pockets that are in my large intestinal walls? I used to eat habaneros like it was an apple.

Detailed Answer:
No, acid from the spicy foods does not cause pouches in large intestine wall. It even does not reach them. Diverticles are almost always caused by constipation. No doubt in that. Bad diet like fatty foods, spicy foods, lack of fiber in diet have some impact in diverticles creation but not directly.

Regards.
