Question: I have been diagnosed by blood tests as having blocked bile ducts - I have severe pain, bloating and feel very weak and tired. My doctor referred me to a naturopath but I wonder whether I shouldn't be consulting a specialist or the surgeon who requested I have an ultrasound which also showed the bile ducts as being inflamed and infected.Thankyou.

Brief Answer: you need a specialist Detailed Answer: Having blocked bile ducts and pain is concerning, and should not be taken lightly. You can develop bile duct infection, which is called cholangitis. This is potentially life threatening. Treatment will depend on where is the blockage, if you have multiple blockages, and why do you have them. Most commonly it is due to a stone, but it could be due to tumors, or autoimmune problems (such as PSC or primary sclerosing cholangitis). You definitely need an ultrasound, and even will likely need an MRI. A surgeon should see, and also a gastroenterologist / liver specialist. Natural medications typically don't help for this type of problems, and again you should seek care as soon as possible before you indeed get "cholangitis". Infection of the bile ducts can make you feel bloated and tired / weak as you described. Hope that helped, let me know if you have further questions or concerns

Dear Dr.Molina, Thankyou very much for answering my question on HealthcareMagic. I perhaps should have given more information in the first place. 1) My gallbladder was removed years ago and I have been told after an endoscopy that I had too much bile in my stomach.Apparently the ultrasound I had last Monday showed the blockage in the ducts was from bile and was causing infection and inflammation. I had very servere pain even swallowing water but that has eased a little and now I have severe bloating and feel very weak and of course tired. I also have fibromyalgia and some autoimmune problems - i.e. sjogrens, lichen sclerosis, and lichen planus. I am being very careful about what I eat - no dairy, My plan after your advice is to try to get an appointment with a surgeon,Dr.Minaar in XXXXXXX River BC who performed the endoscopy two years ago, and I am waiting for a date for a colonoscopy. It was he who ordered the ultrasound but my GP who gave me the results and just told me to see the naturopath (who had been a GP) in XXXXXXX I felt I was flying blind as realized and you confirmed this that I had a serious problem. I think I should have given you more information originally - 1) My gallbladder was removed years ago 2) two years ago Dr.Minaar, a surgeon in XXXXXXX River,BC performed an endoscopy which showed I had slow motility and too much bile in my system 3) Next he will perform a colonoscopy due to hernia in my colon, but prior to the operation to be performed by Dr.Bagdan in Comox BC Dr.Minaar wanted to do the colonoscopy. I was excreting, blood mucous etc. 4) Prior to the colonoscopy he ordered an ultrasouns of my stomach and pelivic area, hence finding out about the blocked liver ducts, inflammation and infection which was causing severe pain, weakness as mentioned. 5)My GP whom I saw to get the results of the ultrasound told mego to a naturopath I have seen before in XXXXXXX and follow his instructions. I felt concerned I needed other medical attention hence contacting Healthcare Magic. Thankyou again for easing my mind in some ways and I plan to telephone Dr.Minaar, the surgeon in XXXXXXX Ri ver on Monday and hope I shall be able to talk to him about my problem. I do have fibromyalgia and other autoimmune diseases - lichen planus, lichen sclerosis, and sjorgrens. Thankyou again for helping me.

Brief Answer: see below Detailed Answer: Yes i definitely suggest you calling your Doctor for further evaluation. Again i think you need a MRI of the liver based on what you are telling me. You may have also an autoimmune disorder of the liver particularly with your history of other autoimmune diseases. You can still go to that naturopath, but i personally don't think that would be good enough. I would not take this problem lightly, even though hopefully you will be fine without issues. Pain is an indicator that something is not right and you should definitely seek medical attention.
