Suggest Treatment For Behavioral Disorder

Posted on Sat, 12 Mar 2016
Question: Hi, I am a parent of a 22 year old daughter that has the diagnosis of autism, ocd, seizure disorder and mentally challenged. She has began some aggressive behavior of trying to scratch and pinch as well as excessive crying without anything triggering any of these. She has a psychiatrist and neurologist but it seems that all they want to do is drug her with trail medicines. I understand that it is difficult to know what is going to work and what is not but this behavior is very scary. Also suddenly she is find and out of that scary mood. It seems the brain gets stuck on a thought and cannot move forward. Any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

There are a variety of FDA-approved medications for behavioral problems in people with autism spectrum disorder. Risperidone is usually my go-to medication for this purpose. However, this is complicated by the fact your daughter has a seizure disorder, as risperidone can increase risk of seizure. Given this, I would try Depakote, as it acts both as a mood stabilizer and an anti-seizure medication.

Thank you for your response. The perfect example is today she was having a great day her mood was happy. We took a ride and when we returned suddenly she comes at me wanting to scratch me. She has cried for 3 hours on and off. I leave her alone and let her get through it. If I approach her it aggravates her more. I will look into the medication Depakote.
