Suggest Treatment For Bacterial Vaginosis

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Mar 2015
Question: Hi, I'm an RN, and will graduate with my FNP in August. I have bacterial vaginosis...I've had it before, several years ago, but know for sure what the s/sx are (foul odor, itching, burning). I've been procrastinating about going to the Dr, because honestly I don't have time...but the sx are driving me crazy at this point. Can you guys write prescriptions as well?? I am in real need of Metrogel :)

Brief Answer:
High vaginal swab culture and sensitivity test is absolutely needed before using antibiotic.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I understand problem you are facing due to vaginal infection and you are looking for a prescription.

Medical ethics and laws of the state doesn't allow us medical doctors to write a prescription without examination. Even if I am allowed to write a script, I am against you taking metrogyl or any other medicine without identifying pathogen and drug sensitivity. In this era, where antibiotic resistance is growing at a rapid rate, I insist all my patients to get microbiology tests before starting an antibiotic.

Accordingly even if you are right with your diagnosis, I insist you get simple high vaginal swab test done from your doctor and send it for culture and sensitivity test as to differentiate which organism is infecting to cause so much trouble and what drug its sensitive too. You need to rule out other possible bacterial or fungal infection or combination of more than one infection before starting metronidazole. Hence I believe it is more than worthwhile to get the test done through your local doctor.

I am sorry, if this is not what you wanted from this website. But in my opinion, this is in your best interest. You are free to write back and claim refund if you aren't satisfied.

Best Wishes
