Question: I constantly get BV like every 4 months. I asked my doctor should my husband be treated and she advised me no that some women get it more often than others and that it wouldn't affect me trying to conceive. Is this correct before relocating my previous doctor treated my husband as well as me and i had no issues for a while. what should I do ?

Brief Answer:
Extended treatment and self care recommended

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Bacterial vaginosis does not necessarily require both partners to be treated. However with present day sexual practices, if a woman has female partners then both need to be treated as per current treatment protocols. Studies indicate that it is important for pregnant women with symptoms to be treated, as this may decrease the risk of premature delivery or low birth weight. Your chances of conceiving remain unaffected.

At the moment you must take medications and apply creams as prescribed by your doctor, even if you do not have symptoms. There is extended-use metronidazole therapy recommended for women who have frequent bacterial vaginoses. This may be discussed with your doctor.

Methods you can apply to prevent recurrence are:
1. Please keep your genital area dry to prevent irritation. Rinse soap from your outer genital area after a shower to wash harmful chemicals in soap and use mildly scented non deodrant soaps.
2. Do not douche your vagina as it can displace the native vaginal flora making you more susceptible for re infections.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
