Suggest Treatment For Bacterial Infection And Cough

Posted on Wed, 18 Feb 2015
Question: Here is the scenario:
I had a bad cold/bacterial infection around Thanksgiving time. I went to urgent care in my area and was prescribed an anti-biotic for 10 days. I was getting better but still had the cough and phlem and was generally uncomfortable. So I went to see my Dr. a couple of weeks ago who prescribed another antibiotic for 6 days. I still have ears that become clogged periodically and an occassional coughing. My concern is that I will be flying to Ecuador in a couple of weeks and I do not want to fly with congestion. I have flown before with this problem and my ears have caused incredible pain and i do not know what to do next to allay the fears of traveling with this congestion. Can you help???

Brief Answer:
audiometry/nasal endoscopy.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having repeated clogging of ears with cough.

As per your clinical details, it occurs to be due to Eustachian tube dysfunction secondary to allergic bronchitis or deviated nasal septum.

On flying with sinus infection, severe pressure changes occurs in sinuses and Eustachian tube leading to ear drum perforation.

I suggest you to consult ent surgeon, get audiometry (Eustachian tube dysfunction, retracted ear drum) nasal endoscopy (deviated septum, sinusitis, allergic polyp), if necessary CT scan para nasal sinuses (to see anatomical abnormalities and pathological extent)). Depending on the examination findings, treatment can be started.

Mean time, Do valsalva exercises (watch youtube video), take prophylactic anti allergic medications tab.lukotas-lc (montelukast + citrizine) one at bed time. add nasal decongestant drops xylometazoline 3 drops/3 times. Stop consuming freezer products (curd/ice creams/citric acid containing fruits).

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
