Question: I am located at YYYY@YYYY I had a heart attack in December 2005. Hence, the need for Plavix. I also have aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD). I am allergic to aspirin. My allergist & pulmonary Drs. have suggested aspirin desensitization. Is possible to be desensitized to aspirin and thus stop using Plavix. Not sure how all of this works.

Thank you for your response. XXXX

Brief Answer:
Aspirin desensitisation is possible & safe...

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX!

Aspirin desensitisation in your case it's not only possible but also the best thing to do. It will ease your pulmonary problems ( AERD), decrease in asthma attack frequency and severity.

The procedure is safe and usually don't require hospitalisation. You will initially be given a very low dose (20-40 mg) of aspirin, and gradually higher doses of aspirin are given every 1.5 – 3 hours while you are closely monitored. The symptoms and severity of reactions from aspirin are different in different people. This is why the exact desensitisation protocol (which include the exact aspirin dose and the exact time of giving it) is determined individually for each patient.

Hope this was of help!

Just as a follow-up, would the fact that I have had three (3) stents placed and a defibrillator implanted make any difference.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Stents has nothing to do with desensibilization...

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX and welcome back!

Aspirin desensitization has nothing to do with the fact that you had placed three stents and a defibrillator implanted.

This information is important for therapeutic decision. Based on this information i also think that in your case you should take aspirin together with clopidogrel (plavix) instead of clopidogrel alone.

Hope this was of help!
